It is the single most quoted publication at promotion boards after the leadership doctrine. The May 2021 edition supersedes the January 2012 version.

FM 1 is a short primer on what it means to belong to the profession of arms and what Soldiers owe each other, civilian leadership, and the country. It was published in May 2025 as a standalone read for Soldiers rather than a replacement for ADP 1. It is written to be read cover to cover in one sitting.
